All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr is a historical-fiction-based novel. All the Light We Cannot See is a World War II (WWII) novel about two youths, one a blind girl in Nazi-occupied France and the other a German orphan boy driven into service by the Nazi army. The story is about a blind French girl (Marie-Laure) and a German boy (Werner) whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. It alternates between the multiple perspectives. After being entrusted with a rare diamond known as the Sea of Flames, Marie-Laure LeBlanc and her father flee Paris. Her father is apprehended at her great-uncle Etienne's house in Saint-Malo, where they flee. Marie-Laure joins the French resistance movement. She and Etienne use Etienne's smuggled radio to communicate with the Allies. Meanwhile, Werner Pfennig, a smart German youngster, appears destined for a life in a coal mine, but instead obtains an admission to a Nazi school. Allied bombers hit Saint-Malo while Werner is searching for Marie-radio Laure's transmissions. Werner and Marie-Laure are both confined in separate areas. Marie-broadcasts Laure's eventually save Werner's life, and in exchange, he tracks her down and saves her from a German officer on the hunt for the Sea of Flames diamond.
